Dr Michael Smith is a senior psychiatry registrar with broad experience working with adult and older-person patients across public mental health services in Queensland and Tasmania. He enjoys working collaboratively with patients to understand their experiences and support recovery in a respectful, compassionate, and practical way.
Originally from Canada, Dr Smith completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, before graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from The University of Queensland in 2018. He commenced his psychiatry training while working regionally in Bundaberg, where he spent three years gaining broad clinical experience. He has since worked primarily at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, with additional experience at Children’s Health Queensland, and completed a locum year in Northwest Tasmania.
Dr Smith has a particular interest in the assessment and treatment of mood disorders, psychotic disorders and anxiety disorders in adult and older-person populations.
Outside of work Dr Smith enjoys lifting weights at the gym, spending time at the beach, hiking and trying new places to eat. He wishes he had more opportunities to get back on the ski slopes.
